Summary
Jebel Rum's father, Rashed Rum, is the revered executioner in a merciless kingdom. Jebel, though, is tiny compared to his two brothers. When his father announces he is retiring, Jebel is casted into shame - nobody believes that he is strong enough to be anything more than a teacher. In the middle of the night, Jebel impulsively begins a quest to seek to a god who is said to give strength. The only thing is that he needs to sacrifice a slave, avoid travelling by river, and climb over a mountain - all in time to be back home for the contest that will decide the fate of the next executioner.

My Thoughts
Almost immediately, I was hooked into The Thin Executioner by Darren Shan. A world which resembles the Middle East, the setting was unique, yet retained familiar aspects - questers, companions, and a family who has all but outcast one member. Jebel isn't the most likeable character, but parallel to him is Tel Hasani, a lovable and honorable man who is willing to sacrifice everything for his loved ones. Beginning the book, I thought it would be about Jebel's story of coming to courage and mental strength against adversity, and while that is an aspect, the main theme is acceptance. It was truly an inspiring tale about our Main Characters discovering the world around them, and finding out that things elsewhere aren't as bad as how they first appear.
Final Conclusion - 5 stars
