Middle-Grade novels are targeted for a younger generation of readers. These are the books you read in middle or elementary school. But even though these tales are for kids, there are some reasons why you should still pick them up.
1. The plots are simpler.
Have you ever just wanted to read a book? Not analyze it, not go back to see if you missed subtle clues, not work to think about what you're reading? Middle-grade books are the one for you. Because the intended audience is younger, its plot is going to be easier to follow. It may even make you feel super smart for figuring everything out by page 50.
2. There is very little romance.
Sometimes, romance can get tiresome. The love interests may all start looking or talking the same and you just need a break, but don't know where to go. Check out the young readers' section at your local store. During the age-range that publishers are after, the kids aren't really worried about romantics and may even prefer friends over crushes.
3. There are no confusing action scenes.
Have you ever started reading an intense action scene, your eyes scanning over the pages like a cheetah over the Serengeti? Next thing you know, your favorite character has ended up dead and the other is critically injured and you don't really know how it happened. Well, you're in luck. Middle-grades don't usually have intense or non-understable actions.
4. Character relationships are easier to figure out.
Say you're at the beginning of a boo, and there have been ten characters thrown at you from every direction and you can't remember if Jay looks like Michael or Michael looks like John. But wait, why is she kissing John, isn't he her brother? Things like these in middle-grade novels are made much less dense and characters are simpler to get to know.
5. They have a different tone.
Just coming right out with it, things are much less gloomier on the shelves of a young reader's. Most authors wouldn't want to give someone so young something to sit and stew over for a long time. This, of course has its exceptions. The Series of Unfortunate Events was one book after the other of inescapable terror. Depending on what you're looking for, choose your book wisely. But you're in for a great deal of luck if you're looking for a feel-good, positive book in the middle-grade section.
All in all, middle-grade novels are even more of an escape. They can take you back to your childhood in just a few pages and make you see things the way a nine or eleven-year-old would. Stories about friendship and family are common and things are less confusing. Middle-grade may not be for everyone, but for these reasons, you should at least give them another shot.
